Over the years, interest in the network management has grown along with the complexity of modern computer networks. The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) was created to support monitoring and managing these networks. Much of the growth in interest has been fueled by the desire to cut costs, especially as some large businesses have thousands of server computers scattered across the globe. Using SNMP, the condition of these servers can be known with near real-time accuracy, and action can be taken accordingly to keep the business running smoothly.

Further, many networks consist of remotely-sited equipment, far from metropolitan areas, all of which need to be monitored and adjusted. It is impractical to send a person to all of them to do this. Consider a cellular network or a remote public-safety network, with transmitters on mountain tops, tall buildings and in rural fields.

In each case, an SNMP database called a Management Information Base (MIB) must be designed for the monitoring and control needs of the particular device, be it a server computer or a remote transmitter.

TUXnology has done quite a few of these, ranging from server room monitoring to cellular and satellite transmitters to in-flight wireless networks for use on airliners.
